Industry Context

The adoption of digital payments has expanded dramatically over the last 10 years. In recent years, non-bank payment solutions have started to build omnichannel capabilities, ensuring a unified wallet across digital and in-store commercial channels. Growing consumer and merchant acceptance has accelerated the introduction of regulatory measures to ensure security and privacy. In order to compete and win, Fintech companies must create solutions with broad merchant acceptance, increasingly-robust regulatory compliance measures, and an intuitive user experience.

Client Challenge

Encora’s client provides payments solutions that support commerce across brick-and-mortar, online and mobile channels. Over time, the high complexity of the client’s product architecture led to slower release schedules. A general lack of reusable components in the code architecture had caused the code to bloat and become increasingly difficult to maintain. New feature releases often introduced bugs that would subsequently need to be addressed, delaying revenue and eroding customer trust.

Approach

Encora worked with the client to rearchitect the product suite with reusable, scalable components and consolidated business logic.

  • Product Planning services support the joint Encora-client team in actively managing the product development roadmap, prioritizing new features for next-gen products that will drive future growth.
  • Platform Modernization services were used to enhance existing capabilities to address regulatory compliance mandates (e.g., PCI, EMV L3, GDPR).
  • Product Support services maintained and enhanced existing product portfolio, including payment processing SDKs, encryption and security services for P2P payments, and expansion of payment type acceptance (e.g., ApplePay, SamsungPay) at POS terminals.
  • Product Engineering Development services established robust, efficient and high-throughput processes for new product engineering.
  • Test Automation services and tools were put in place to streamline and enhance code validation and verification testing prior to release.

Results

The re-architecture of the client’s products, based on shared, scalable components greatly improved the quality of code, thereby reducing the number of bugs to be resolved, and increasing overall speed to market. The client’s new product platform and agile development process supports significantly higher innovation throughput, helping them to maintain their market leadership position.
